Dr. Sanford Kunkel graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University in 1978. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982.
Dr. Kunkel completed a categorical year in orthopedic surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1983. He completed his residency at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids in 1987. He completed fellowships in Sports Medicine at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1987 and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, in 1988.
Dr. Kunkel is team physician for the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever and a consultant for DePauw University Athletic Department and Brebeuf Preparatory School. He is a member and president of the NBA Team Physician Society. He has made many presentations to professional groups and published numerous articles in medical journals.
Dr. Kunkel is Clinical Lecturer at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the National Basketball Association Team Physician Society, and other medical organizations.
